Papaya Girls (881)

Two girls, one dream.
Little Papaya and Big Papaya grew up idolizing Chen Jin Lang, the King of Hokkien Getai, and dreamt of one day becoming ‘Getai’ singers themselves. This is their heart-wrenching story as told by their highly sensitive friend and driver, Guan Yin.

Coached by their seamstress Ling Yi (Aunt Ling), the Papaya sisters struggled at first because they had no “feel” in their voices. As a last resort, they appeal to Aunt Ling’s estranged twin sister, the Goddess of ‘Getai’, for help. She grants them their wish, but warns them that the price will be high, especially if they do not obey the rules of ‘Getai’. The most difficult rule “Rule number 5” dictates that they may not love or be loved by any man.

After receiving the blessing, The Papaya sisters hit the ‘Getai’ circuit by storm, and using their newfound “feel”, sing their hearts out. Big Papaya pursues her dream despite strong parental objections. Little Papaya, like her deceased parents, has cancer and is in a personal race against time to realize her potential. Through their perseverance, hard work and the help of Aunt Ling’s amazing costumes, the Papaya Sisters become the most popular sister act in town. They use their fame to help raise funds to help Chen Jin Lang, who is also suffering from cancer, but they are soon devastated by his passing. While Little Papaya grieves, Big Papaya finds solace in the arms of Guan Yin.

Unbeknownst to them, rival sister group the Durian Sisters have become intensely jealous of the Papayas' success, and are determined to trip them up by messing up their schedule. With the help of their gangster Godfather, the Durians succeed in shutting the Papayas out of many ‘Getai’ performances. Guan Yin cannot defend them from the Durians, and even the Goddess is appalled by the tactics employed by the Durians. She grants the Papayas whatever celestial powers she can bestow, but the Goddess also warns them that there is a limit to what she can do.

At one such confrontation, the Durians challenge the Papayas to a showdown. The stakes are high: whoever loses will have to leave the ‘Getai’ scene for good. The Papayas accept, and start preparing for the big day – new costumes, new songs, new dances. The movie climaxes with a dramatic musical battle. Both sides pull out all the stops to win over the audience.

Now tell me this, what the hell is a Papaya Girls? That'probably the corniest name i've ever heard after Human Torch. I've got the invites from Singapore and the movie is releasing 9th Aug in Singapore.

Nothing fantastic actually about this until i found out that the Papaya (or Durian) twin sisters are May Wan & Choy Wan. Now, that will be fun. They've appear in our FHM posing as the hottest threesome you've ever imagined. But this...

Upon further research 881 is coming to our cinemas too. 1 month later. If you're keen with our Malaysian counterpart, watch out for it 6th September onwards.
And by the way, Getai, actually means 'ge tai' in mandarin, which means a stage. Remember during the Chinese Hungry Ghost festival there's always performances in your neighbourhood? Where you have no idea why these bunch of people on the stage sings your grandpa's fav song?

Flash Point

Flash Point's working title were The Signal, Fuse, City Without Mercy, City with No Mercy.

An officer from Serious Crimes Unit aka O-Kei, detests crime and his lifelong nemeses are a Vietnamese gang of three brothers - Archer, Tony and Tiger. In order to further infiltrate the gang and fight them from within, Jun has planted a mole, Wilson (Louis Koo), who has managed to gain the complete trust of the gang. However, Wilson's dual role is exposed and resulting battles leave him handicapped for life. Before Archer's trial, Tony & Tiger wipe out all the witnesses.

The storyline wasn't fantastic but it is not too important because seeing Donnie Yen's action would probably be the seat filler. There's great martial art potray in the movie, ranging from kick-boxing to muay thai and a lil bit of pinning & grappling techniques that made fame from Brazilian Ju-Jitsu & Judo.

Louis Koo, in the other hand, is not a martial arts practitioner, he's always behind the wheels. Planted as a mole, he did quite a good job.

If you would like to compare with The Invisible Target (IT), IT gives a pinch of humour and human does look like they can die and gets tired after fighting. Flash Plash is always full of energy and by paying attention to the martial arts, you might learn a trick or few.

Movie showing nationwide except Cathay Cineplexes.

This is a 3.5 out of 5 flashes.

Blind Zodiac

Blind Dating will NOT reach Malaysia shores, opening May 11 in the US, I was waiting for this comedy & of course he looked handsome to be drooled on the big screen. This caught me because of the funny 'double meaning' title.

Blind dating is about this young handsome popular guy in the school which happens to be blind. His brother, determined to help him to find his first sexual experience setup blind dates for him.
Blind Dating stars Chris Pine (the chap in Just My Luck) and Jane Seymour (Wedding Crashers)

Another movie which goes to our dissapointment is Zodiac, a David Fincher movie (famed by Fight Club) something i'd really looking forward to since the beginning of 2007. It's about this serial killer named Zodiac. And it's base on the real case, in the 70's setting.

Zodiac is about his serial killer, who gives hints & codes and a series of trail. Well, he made the city in the panic mode. Clever isn't it?

This movie opened long long time ago in the US. Tentatively it's suppose to be reaching our shores somewhere in August. It's confirm that it will not. Even the DVD was released in the US in July.

You'll know where to get these copies.

Starlight Cinema

Starlight Cinema ended it's 5th time last Saturday (28/7). Held in KBU this time (thank God we're not smelling those horse feaces anymore when it held it for 4 years in Bukit Kiara.

I missed the 3rd, the 4th & this time (2005, 2006, 2007) because, i don't think i wanna watch the outdated movies while being bitten by mosquitoes, again. Moreover, this year, it's been raining almost every night. However, I'm sure there will be a 6th installation next year, for those who missed it, or have no idea what is it about, let me tell you. It's a outdoor cinema concept held on a big field, where by you'll get to lie on the grass and catch a movie and watch some stars in the sky. Great for picnic with your buddies, or your girlfriends/boyfriends. (Hint: bring pillows)

Plenty of food stalls available so you may decide on your picnic menu on the spot.

For more information please log on to http://www.starlightcinema.com.my/. There shall be some compliementary passes for those who actually join the contest when the date's near.

The Simpsons Movie

They first invaded your boring TV Box, and now they come to the big screen.
It's vulgar, it's yellow and it's almost the same as what you've seen in the TV, it's pervert.

So why does people have to pay to watch it in the big screen? I found out that it's because you then got to laugh at these silly jokes with 200 strangers in a dark, cold room. Now, that just made the movie funnier, isn't it?

The Simpsons Movie doesn't give a sold out hall in most of the cinemas on the opening day, but it's ok because, not everyone can understand this silly family. You may bring your kids to watch Transformers, you watch Transformers because you wonder what's the hype about, why everyone got crazy with it, and for the young at heart, we watch Transformers 2 to 3 times in the cinemas (and yet still get a RM10 DVD copy) just for the sake of seeing the perfect transform again.

Oh yes, whatever is it. Please avoid IMAX unless it's in 3D or DMR.

Now, this yellowman reminds us of the DiGi YELLOWMAN and of course, Dunkin Donuts.

While you're at it, try this http://www.simpsonizeme.com/
